- MATH 151 FAQ - final exam, etc..
Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions about the MATH 151 final
exam, etc:
Q. Is the exam open book?
A. Yes, the exam is open textbook. No notebooks or loose papers may be brought
to the exam, however. (No calculators or other electronic devices either.)
Q. Will the exam emphasize material covered since Midterm II?
A. No, the exam gives roughly equal emphasis to each unit that we have covered.
If you are unsure what material we have covered, please refer to the Syllabus
posted on the course website. You may be tested on any material from class or
from the assigned readings.
Q. Where do I write the exam?
A. The exam takes place in two rooms, and the class has been partitioned as
follows. Last names A - J in room B9201 and last names K - Z in room C9001.
Please bring picture ID.
Q. If the weather conditions are bad, how will I know whether the university is
open and exams are on schedule?
A. Refer to SFU road and traffic report at
http://www.sfu.ca/security/sfuroadconditions/ which is updated quite frequently.
I recommended that you allow yourself extra time to travel to campus during
this time of year.
Q. Is the workshop still open?
A. Yes, the workshop is open Monday - Thursday 9:30-4:30 and Friday 9:30-2:30
this week. There is plenty of help available for those who visit the workshop.
Q. Are the grades scaled? Are the letter grades assigned using a bell curve?
A. Scaling of grades can only take place when there are already letter grade
boundaries in place. I do not set letter grade boundaries at the beginning of
semester because I like to have the flexibility to take into consideration the
level of difficulty of the coursework when assigning grades. I do not believe in
using bell curves. If everyone does well then everyone will get a good grade.
Q. What is the minimum grade that I need to meet the prerequisite to take MATH 152?
A. You need a minimum grade of C-. While a D is a passing grade, it does not
meet the prerequisite for MATH 152.
Q. Will I get my final exam back?
A. No, university policy requires that I keep your exams for one full year
before shredding them. I will be scheduling an exam viewing in the workshop soon
after the final exam.
Q. When will we get our grades?
A. I am expected to submit my letter grade recommendations to the department
chair within 96 hours of the final exam. I will not be posting them on the
course website since they are not official until they are approved by the dean.
You will get your grades through GoSFU soon after I have submitted them.
Q. If I am close to the boundary of the next letter grade, can I ask my
instructor to bump up my grade?
A. Letter grades are never revised on this basis. In a class of this size, there
will be many students who are within a small margin of a letter grade boundary.
This is unfortunate for those that fall below the grade boundary but this is
unavoidable.
Q. If I have a sad story to tell, will my instructor bump up my grade?
A. No. While I am sure I would be sympathetic to your situation, grades are
never revised on this basis.
Q. Due to medical/compassionate reasons, I have to miss the final exam. What
should I do?
A. You should notify me prior to (ideally) or within 96 hours after missing the
exam to discuss what your options are. Your reason for missing the exam should
be well-documented. (An example of supporting documentation would be a doctor's
note specifically stating that you are/were unfit to write the exam.)
Q. I am enjoying mathematics and considering taking further math courses. Where
can I find out more information about math courses, programs, and careers?
A. I recommend making an appointment to see me.
Best of luck with your exams.
Regards,
Justin Gray

- Chapters 4 & 10 Review problems
Solutions to the end of Chapter Review problems for Chapters 4 and 10 of your
textbook are now posted on the course website. (These are solutions for all of
the end of chapter review problems, so please ignore problems that relate to
material from Chapter 10 that we did not cover. Refer to the Syllabus posted on
this website if you are unsure about which parts of Chapter 10 we covered.)
Refer to these solutions only when you have made a genuine attempt at solving
the problems and, if needed, asked the TAs in the workshop for hints. You will
learn very little by reading the solutions without making a bona fide attempt at
solving the problems yourself.
The workshop is open Monday - Thursday 9:30-4:30 and Friday 9:30-2:30 this week.

Justin Gray

- MATH 151 Assignment 7
Dear MATH 151 students,
Thank you to everyone who sent me email regarding your Paper Assignment 7 grades.
If you attempted to view your grades earlier, you would have seen a grade of
0/12 and a message stating that nothing was submitted. Please disregard this.
The grades were set to be released yesterday, but no marks have been recorded yet.
This assignment will be marked and returned to the workshop a couple of days
later than usual. As such, I have now postponed the release date for the grades
in LON-CAPA to eliminate any further confusion.

Justin Gray

- online homework due dates
It was brought to my attention that some of the due dates for the online
homework have fallen out of sync with the pace of lectures. Accordingly, I have
postponed the due dates for several assignments and, in some cases, increased
the number of tries available. You should find that you are now able to continue
working on some of these assignments that were previously due, even if you had
used the maximum number of tries available at the time. Thank you to everyone
who drew this to my attention.

Justin Gray
